Core Principles & Methods

We love that you’re here! We can’t wait for you to meet our team of teachers and start your own journey of self-realization. This is your place to commit to your PERSONAL GROWTH using movement, sweat, breath, stillness, and mindfulness.

Core Principles

Yoga is an ancient practice, a science of self realization, that has been passed down from teacher to student for thousands of years. There are many different ways to practice. At our schools, we challenge ourselves to honor the teachings of past masters but also to keep those teachings relevant and engaging, bringing the ancient wisdom of the sages into our modern times. Our classes will help you clear your body and mind so you can function at your best…every day.

Our mission at Yoga Factory and Yoga Hive is to share our love for Yoga (and how it has changed our lives) with students from all walks of life. Our teachers practice consistently with our students, and continue to learn the benefits of the yogic lifestyle along with you. Anyone can benefit from a consistent yoga practice whether they are young, old, healthy, sick, happy, or distressed. Yoga helps us reconnect to our inner self and realize our full potential.

Methods

We utilize heat as a therapeutic tool for all of our classes. The Original Hot Yoga classes are at a standard 104 degrees, and other classes are between 85 – 90 degrees.

Why? The heat is a tool which helps you go deeper into your practice both physically and mentally. It improves circulation, it helps you detox, and it oxygenates the body. It even helps combat depression (check out this Harvard study). Science continues to offer many endorsements for moving mindfully in heated environments, and we have personally witnessed thousands benefit from this practice over the years.

Offerings

Original Hot Yoga is our core offering. We are the only schools in the Pittsburgh area that offer this therapeutic style of Hatha Yoga from northern India consisting of 26 postures or “asanas” and two breathing exercises that became popular in the early 1970s. Challenging and invigorating, this style of yoga is practiced in a room heated to over 100 degrees. Each posture is held and repeated in a set sequence in order to maximize the health benefits. The practice is suitable for beginners if they don’t have conditions that high temperatures can aggravate. The benefits of hot yoga include improved overall health, weight loss, reduced stress, increased range of motion, and a reduction in anxiety and depressive symptoms. Intermediate Hatha, Fusion, and the 84 Asanas are all branches of this style of yoga that develop the standard 26&2 sequence more deeply so you can explore your movement potential.

Vinyasa Yoga is our second foundation and is a dynamic, fun class with the core principle of moving with breath. Stemming from the Ashtanga System, these classes provide a wide variety of techniques to help you connect your mind and body. This approach tends to be more “athletic” and use more upper body strength.

Slow Flow and Yin are great starting points for those seeking gentler movement but still enjoy a challenge. Both styles of classes are very deliberate and make conscious use of stillness, building resilience through longer holds and deeper stretching. This opens areas especially rich in connective tissues, which can be highly effective in reducing tension that is held deep within the body, as well as stress.

Student Highlights

“Yoga has been very healing for me both physically and mentally. When I started practicing, I had a knee injury. Yoga has allowed me to heal and stay healthy physically. It has also provided me with stress relief and a space where I can make room wherever I need it in my life.”

Becky

“I’m so grateful to have found Yoga Factory/Yoga Hive and to be part of such a welcoming and supportive community. Every class offers something different, and I always leave feeling stronger, more grounded, and a little more connected both to myself and to the people around me. Yoga has become much more than exercise for me; it’s a meaningful part of my life and something I look forward to every week. ”

“Even though I’m active and like to move, a dedicated yoga practice balances things out like nothing else can. I’m aware of posture, core strength and flexibility in ways that I wouldn’t be if I didn’t practice. When I tell people I take yoga, sometimes I hear “yoga is too slow,” or “yoga is boring,” - I always say "you haven’t found the right class-keep looking!" Find a studio that engages and challenges you. I found that at Yoga Hive — amazing teachers, friends and fellow yogis I look forward to seeing every time I practice.”
